Sugar Blues

Nobody but nobody should ever be allowed to begin what is called psychiatric treatment anyplace, anywhere unless and until they have had a glucose tolerance test to discover if they can handle sugar.

“[S]ince we only think we can handle sugar because we initially have strong adrenals, why wait until they give us signs and signals that they’re worn out?  Take the load off now by eliminating sugar in all forms and guises, starting with that soda pop you have in your hand.

The mind truly boggles when one glances over what passes for medical history.  Through the centuries, troubled souls have been barbecued for bewitchment, exorcised for possession, locked up for insanity, tortured for masturbatiory madness, psychiatrized for psychoses, lobotomized for schizophrenia.

How many patients would have listened if the local healer had told them that the only thing ailing them was sugar blues?

Sugar Blues by William Dufty, 1975, pp. 72-3.

Raw Foods

You will never heat milk again after studying heat treatments, nor will you want pasteurized beer, pasteurized soy sauce, pasteurized fruit juices or pasteurized eggs.

L. Carlton and M. Brauninger in a letter to Dr. Joseph Mercola in “Pasteurized Milk and its Link to Autism“ quoted in The Untold Story of Milk by Ron Schmid, 2003, page 331.

Food Faith

When… dyes, preservatives, insecticides, hormones, herbicides, antibiotics — chemicals! —are put into our food by strangers whose motives we have no reason to trust, you can see how food anxiety can reach unreasonable heights.    There’s a rise in eating disorders, food phobias, children who turn vegetarian at the age of twelve.  There can hardly be anything more unnerving than to distrust the food one eats.

Noah’s Children by Sara Stein, 2001, page 129.

GUIDELINES TO HEALTHY EATING

Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food.
- Hippocrates

………

Enjoy:

* A balanced diet. Allow at least 40% of your diet to consist of healthy fats, with the rest being equally divided between proteins and carbohydrates, with only a small amount of starchy carbs. For dieters who are afraid to consume a high-fat diet, read

* Organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products from pastured animals. Enjoy rich, nutrient-dense animal foods from pastured organic sources such as pork bacon and lard, beef and lamb tallow, and goose and duck fat.  Be sure to include organ meats, particularly liver, regularly in your diet.  Fats from foods such as raw, soaked, organic crispy nuts and seeds, organic butter and ghee, full-fat dairy, rich raw cheeses from pastured animals, fatty meats and wild-caught seafood and shellfish should be abundant in the diet.  Vegetable oils should be organic and cold-pressed, and include only traditional oils such as coconut, palm, and extra virgin olive oil.

Vegetarians must consume large amounts of raw dairy products and eggs in order to get the nutrients they need to give birth to healthy babies. A vegan diet is not a healthy diet for expectant mothers or children.

* Unrefined sea-salt. Table salt is unhealthy because it is highly processed, refined, and contains toxic additives.  Unrefined, unheated, unadulterated sea salt provides important macro- and trace minerals.  Choose salts from clean, unpolluted sources, such as Celtic Sea Salt.

* A variety of organic whole fruits and vegetables, preferably from local farmers. Low-glycemic vegetables and whole fresh fruits in season are high in antioxidants, trace minerals, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are best absorbed when eaten the traditional way, with fats such as butter and cream. Take advantage of a wide variety of greens, fruits, and vegetables in season by shopping at our local Farmer’s Markets. Organic foods are particularly important for children and pregnant mothers. Look at Jessica Prentice’s book, “Full Moon Feast” for information on seasonal eating.

* Live, Fermented food with every meal.  Follow the recipes in the “Nourishing Traditions” cookbook by Sally Fallon and “Wild Fermentation” by Sandor Katz, to create delicious healthy soft drinks, pickles, and condiments to eat with every meal.

* Soaked or sprouted grains, nuts and seeds. Soaking or sprouting, as recommended in the “Nourishing Traditions” cookbook by Sally Fallon, will remove phytates and other naturally occurring toxins, and render vital nutrients highly digestible. Grinding your own whole grains to produce fresh flours is highly recommended. A great series of articles on wheat and digestive disease can be found at the following URLs:

* Bone broths. Buy pastured meats with bone included, and low-boil bones with a little vinegar or whey for 4-12 hours to make delicious, gelatin-rich, mineral-rich bone broths to flavor soups, stews and sauces. Purchase heads of deep sea fish at Northwest Seafood at Thornebrook Shopping Center, and make delicious, nutrient-dense fish broths as a base for soups and sauces.

* Raw food. Raw milk, eggs, cheeses, meat and fish are found in all healthy traditional diets. Some important vitamins and enzymes present in raw foods are lost through cooking. Steak tartare, sushi, uovo sbattuto (Italian raw beaten eggs), rare roast beef and steak, milk yogurt, kefir, and cheeses (unpasteurized, of course), are examples of foods traditionally eaten raw.  Freezing meat and fish for at least 14 days prior to eating insures freedom from parasites. Keeping the levels of hydrochloric acid and proteolytic enzymes high in your stomach offers resistance to bacterial and parasitic infections from a variety of sources.

For more information see:

* Pure water. Drink half your body weight in ounces of pure water every day (about 8 glasses). You need water to eliminate toxins. If you drink diuretics such as coffee, tea, wine, or sodas (we recommend you do not), you will need to drink twice as much again as the diuretic to keep yourself hydrated.

* Exercise as your doctor recommends, and according to what makes you feel good.  Exercise guidelines for various health needs are discussed in

*       Cooking at home. Save money, develop your family life, and buy your own groceries from farmers you know, so you can be sure it is done right. Read

Avoid:

*Sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.  Fructose is the most toxic of all the refined sugars, causing liver damage.  The processing of HFCS often leaves traces of mercury in the final product.    Reduce sweeteners, and use only those that are whole foods, such as organic maple syrup and raw honey. Fruit juice is not a healthy food because of the high sugar content. A fun and informative book is

  • Sugar Blues” by William Dufty.

* Hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oils promote inflammation and cardiovascular disease, while decreasing immunity and hormonal health. Nerves and brain function are also affected.  These toxic substances are outlawed in food in some areas, but check labels to avoid these and trans fats.

* Chemical additives. Toxic food additives make fast food and processed foods addictive, and stress the liver and immune system. In particular, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, nutrasweet, and even “natural” flavors such as MSG in its many forms are excitotoxins, and are very dangerous to the nervous system, especially in children and babies.  See Russell L. Blaylock’s book,

·        Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills.”  See the video here.

* Refined grains. These are not real foods.  White flour and other refined grains raise blood sugar, stress the adrenal glands, feed yeast infections, and cause a myriad of health problems.

* Pasteurized, processed, canned, and packaged foods. Industrial foods are devoid of real nutrition. Processed and packaged foods create nutritional deficiencies and diminish one’s health and vitality. Avoid eating foods with a label. Boxed cereals of all kinds are particularly unhealthy. For the big picture, read “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” by Dr. Weston A. Price, DDS. Also “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser and “Beating the Food Giants” by Paul A. Stitt.

* Microwaved or irradiated food.  Microwaves destroy and denature proteins, enzymes, and distort the structures of the components of your food. Irradiation is another destructive force that will render healthy food dangerous.

* Rancid oils and too many polyunsaturated fats. Many nut and seed oils become rancid rapidly, and must be kept constantly refrigerated and in a dark bottle. They must be used up quickly or thrown out before too long, to keep them from becoming toxic. In his research on healthy traditional diets, Dr. Price found that polyunsaturated fats comprised a very small proportion of the diet, and recent research has shown that too much polyunsaturated fat in the diet can cause health problems.

* Isolated and refined proteins. Isolated, processed (e.g. hydrolyzed) proteins are denatured and removed from their natural context. These substances are often found in sports or diet protein powders and as food additives, and they can damage your health.

* Repetitious eating. Some food cravings and many food sensitivities indicate allergies. You can use an allergy elimination treatment or food rotation diet to relieve these symptoms. Food allergies can stress the digestive and immune systems. Common allergens include wheat and other grains, dairy, corn, soy, citrus fruits, nuts, chocolate, coffee, table salt, and soda. Read “Say Goodbye to Illness” by Devi S. Nambudripad, MD, DC, Lac, PhD.

* Over-the-Counter medications. Many common medicines can lead to nutritional deficiencies that cause more problems in the long term than the initial problem the medicine was taken for.  Before you decide to take any medicine, be sure to read the insert on side effects and contra-indications. For more information, read “Nutritional Costs of Drugs: A Guide to maintaining Good Nutrition While Using Prescription and Over-The-Counter Drugs” by Ross Pelton and James LaValle.

* Exposure to toxic chemicals. Mercury from silver fillings and all vaccinations, fluoride from fluoridated water, toothpaste, and dental procedures, and phthalates from plastics, are all common toxins that are wise to avoid in everyday life as well as in your food. Toxins such as petrochemicals and heavy metals found in solvents, pesticides, cosmetics, electronic equipment, fluorescent lightbulbs, batteries, and household cleaners including bleach, can damage your liver, nervous system, and alter your hormonal balance. Out-gassing from new cars and household materials such as synthetic carpets, flooring, particleboard, paint, etc. can make people sick, especially children. Remove these toxins from your home, your yard, and your workplace whenever possible. If you have your silver fillings removed, be sure it is done by a biological dentist who understands the severe toxicity of mercury, and takes precautions. For more on environmental toxins, read “Our Stolen Future” by Theo Colborn, Dianne Dumanoski, and John Peterson Myers. For the closest accessible safe dentistry that I know of, see Dr. Stephen Hwang in Jacksonville, and for children, Dr. Edwards in Sanford.

* Exposure to radiation. Radiation from x-rays, CAT scans, microwaves, cell phones, electrical appliances, and computers damages cells, distorts cell division, and may cause serious health effects. Avoid these. When your doctor suggests a CAT scan, you can ask for an MRI. When mammograms are recommended, you may ask for thermal imaging, instead.  Certain protective measures may be taken when radiation is unavoidable, such as using Bio-Pro chips on cell phones and appliances, and taking iodine supplements before and after exposure to radioactive substances or gamma radiation.

* Unfermented soy products.  Unfermented soy contains phytates and other anti-nutrients that bind up minerals.  Soy is known to be a gender bender, having a significant effect on the hormone systems of adults. It is particularly dangerous for children and infants, and its use in formula should be outlawed. The consumption of unfermented soy is associated with early dementia and thyroid imbalance. Read “The Whole Soy Story” by Kaayla T. Daniel, Ph.D.

* GMOs. Genetically modified foods are not adequately safety tested, and may rival global warming as an ecological threat to humankind. Read "Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You'reEating," by Jeffrey Smith.

* Cholesterol NOT! Cholesterol is an important nutrient, vital for memory and brain function, hormone balance, cell membranes, Vitamin D production in the skin, and cholesterol is the raw material from which all steroid hormones are produced. Read

Life Expectancy

What is the average life expectancy of Americans? For a long time it has been the low seventies for men and upper seventies for women. So it comes as a shock to learn that the average life expectancy for Americans has dropped to 69.3 years, according to the America's Health Rankings report, issued at the American Public Health Association's annual meeting. This figure is exceeded by 28 other countries, including Britain, France and Germany and is about five years less than the life expectancy in Japan. According to Dr. Reed Tuckson, this dismal number reflects increasing obesity, fewer people quitting smoking (although only 20.8 percent of Americans smoke today, down from almost one-third in 1990), and increasing numbers of people without health insurance. Officials made no mention of the increasing consumption of processed foods containing refined sweeteners, processed vegetable oils and toxic additives, and certainly did not allow even a whisper about the almost complete absence of nutrient-dense foods such as organ meats, shellfish and butterfat and eggs from grass-fed animals from the American diet (Reuters, December 13, 2005).

Radiation

Although not widely recognized by the public or reported as such by the media, the primary uses of industrial radioactive materials are medical.  Industry uses radioactive isotopes primarily for irradiation (sterilization) and in the manufacture of radioisotopes used as radio-pharmaceuticals, as tracers, in gauges, heart pacemakers, smoke detectors, and in x-ray equipment.  Industrial irradiation includes the sterilization of medical disposables and laboratory supplies (plastic syringes, surgical gloves, non-woven drapes and gowns, Petri dishes, pipettes, and test tubes), sterilization of materials used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries (e.g. raw products such as talc, cocoa butter, inorganic pigments, enzymes, starch powder, laboratory animal bedding, corks, vaccines, and manufactured pharmaceuticals), and sterilization of food supplies (as yet, a small part of the industry).  There are approximately 20,000 commercial users of radioactive isotopes in the United States.

The Lost Language of Plants by Stephen Harrod Buhner, 2002, page 62.

Neuron Death

Vaccinations contain at least four neuro-toxins: mercury, formaldehyde, MSG and aluminum hydroxide. Researchers at the University of British Columbia have been looking at the possible effects of the fourth item in this list. They injected mice with anthrax vaccine containing aluminum hydroxide. After 20 weeks studying the mice, the team found statistically significant increases in anxiety (38 percent); memory deficits (41 times more errors than the sample group); and allergic skin reaction (20 percent). On autopsy, brain tissue samples showed that 35 percent of the cells were in the process of destroying themselves. According to Chris Shaw, lead researcher for the project, his research shows a link between aluminum hydroxide and symptoms of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Lou Gehrig's disease. "No one in my lab wants to get vaccinated," he said. "This totally creeped us out. We weren't out there to poke holes in vaccines. But all of a sudden, oh my God--we've got neuron death!"
