ROOTS FESTIVAL Are you interested in helping with the ROOTS
Festival? We are looking for organizers
who want to carve out a chunk of the concept and run with it. Call Maria Minno for the date of the
primary organizational meeting. ROOTS stands
for Reclaiming Our Origins, Traditions, and
Skills. The idea is
that we have lost our concept of and pride in our roots, as well as the
traditions and skills that tied us to the land we or our ancestors once
inhabited. The “sense of place,” the
knowledge of native medicinal and edible foods, and skills involving the
sustainable use of our local natural resources, have all been lost to us for
the most part. This knowledge, these
traditions and skills, and this connection with the land, helped our
ancestors thrive generation after generation.
Because so many of us are displaced from the lands of our heritage,
many of us do not have traditions that help us live in harmony with the land
we now occupy. We hope to move in the
direction of “becoming native” to this beautiful As envisioned, this ROOTS
festival will be a little bit like the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire, without the
tacky commercialism, but with the timeless fun. Artisans, craftswo/men, herbalists,
naturalists, and anyone skilled in practical non-industrial manufacturing,
will be wanted at this event. We will
ask musicians, actors, jugglers, artists, and entertainers of all varieties
who perform without electronics to take the stage. We will welcome any type of off-the-grid
games, such as archery, fencing, cards, adventure games, chess, quests,
races, puzzles, and more. We plan to
set up tents or clusters for divination, bodywork, healing arts, and for
herbalists to practice their craft and demonstrate their skills. We want to offer demonstrations performed
by those who possess forgotten basic living skills, such as farming,
permaculture, recycling, repair, food preparation, cooking, spinning,
weaving, metalworking, woodworking, healing, and anything relevant to the
needs and opportunities we face on a shrinking globe. We desire a wide variety of high-quality
traditional, natural, home-made prepared foods to offer to fair-go-ers, as
well as farm products to offer for sale.
We are planning this event out at Crone's Cradle
Conserve for the weekend of October 31- If you would like to receive
this news and more as occasional emails from the Academy of Thirteen Moons,
send me a note or give me a call to get your address added to the email
list. Best Wishes to You and Yours! Maria Minno 352-375-3028 |
